Feature Month – Lombardy

Influenced by some of our favourite regions, each month we highlight a favourite dish, drink and wine plus what inspires us in music, fashion and art.

Wine

2014 Ar. Pe. Pe. ‘Rosso Di Valtellina’ Nebbiolo (Chiavennasca), Lombardy, Italy

Mountain Nebbiolo in local dialect is Chiavennasca from the Valtellina area of Lombardy and is one of the planets most beautiful wines. This bottling is made from vines up to 50 years old and is a great insight into delicate alpine Nebbiolo. Simply stunning.

Drink

FLUFFY GARIBALDI X DANTE

“Created by Gaspare Campari in Milan circa 1860, Campari is an alcoholic spirit obtained from the infusion of bitter herbs, aromatic plants and fruit in alcohol and water. Many have tried to guess the number of ingredients: some say there are 20 or 60, others list the ingredients at 80. To this day, alcohol and water are the only known ingredients of its special and secret recipe. Its vibrant red colour, intense aroma and distinctive bitter taste make it extremely versatile, and the perfect base for some of the most famous cocktails around the world” Campari.com

30mls Campari
Built over ice in a glass
Topped with fresh juice from oranges
Garnish with an orange half wheel

N.B: put the oranges through a Breville juicer. This aerated juice carries the flavours of Campari better than other methods of juicing.

Food

Cotoletta alla Milanese with Creamed Greens & Lemon

The Milanese can get a little defensive if you happen to suggest that their cotoletta is comparable to Vienna’s wiener schnitzel and will proudly point out that their cotoletta has been a specialty of the Lombardy region since as far back as the 12th century. Recorded in documents from 1134, a meal of lombos cum panitio (breadcrumbed rib chops) was one of nine courses for the festival of San Satiro. Some dishes are truly timeless. This preparation of breading and frying meat is truly one of them. This version features amazing local pork chops and rustic greens cooked with wine, crew, and garlic. Squeeze on the lemon and tuck in.

Music

Gino Soccio

This month’s spotlight shines on Canada via Italy through a man whom described Disco as “… more than just music. It’s a social movement, and I’m not jiving you when I say it’s spreading to epidemic proportions. It fills a demand for people who want to blow their minds dancing”. Slim and wide-eyed with a handlebar moustache and a mane of dark hair, his 1979 debut LP’s lead single, ‘Dancer’ had topped the Billboard disco charts for six weeks, which propelled the LP ‘Outline’ onto more than a million turntables globally. It is still considered one of the most revered albums to come out of the booming Montreal disco scene.

Soccio started out in a disco band when Montreal producer Pat Deserio called him and asked if he would play the keyboard and help compose for the Kebekelektrik album. Prior to this, Soccio was working as a local session musician. His supreme talent lent itself to solo work and he began to create music that mixed the glamour of European disco with the gritty bottom-end of American R&B. But after five short years of a bright and highly successful career, Soccio vanished. There were rumours he had lost his mind, become a vagrant or a recluse but it seems he simply became disillusioned with the death of the thing he loved the most; the disco era.
